To the father of Psychoanalysis
Respected Sigmund Freud Sir,
Today, as the echo of your name completes 165 years on this planet, we as psychology students were reminded of your tremendous work in the field by our teachers. In our first lessons though, all we were told about you was that you shook the world of Psychology with your radical view of human behavior as a dynamic manifestation of unconscious desires and conflicts. We were told, its psychoanalysis and that you father it!
We've by now also been told that you brought forth the role of unconscious sexual desires, transference and other such 'unspoken' conflicts in pathological disorder, and developed methods to deal with them via dialogue between the patient and psychoanalyst.
As a still in training psychology student, we are still being taught a lot about all your theories and analysis such as that of dreams as wish fulfillments on the basis of which you developed clinical models and symptoms of repression. It's so unique to know that, with your analysis, you developed scientifically proven models that later were used for diagnosis and treatments.
We were all taken by the boldness of your character as a neurologist when we were told that your theories talked of ego, super-ego, existence of a sexual energy(libido) with which, you said mental processes are invested. We wonder if anyone else could have dared to take that view and thereby, talk of all mental processes that weren't mentioned earlier, such as, death drive, neurotic guilt etc. And for that, we were amazed to know about your 'self-analysis' when you suffered through health and dream irregularities that you related with your pained relations with your father, and eventually used your own experiences to work on your theories! Clear learning for us all to make light that brightens out of heat that pains!
The best of it all, we are glad that people like you and Vygotsky sir also pushed boundaries and talked of the influence of culture. Well, we are sure you both must have met in heaven and talked of your theories ^-^. Talking of heaven meetings, we are sure you also must have crossed paths with your patient Anna O, the talk treatment of whom eventually led you to leave hypnosis as a method and develop free association, didn't you? Also, we're sure you'd have rebound with your ENT friend and think-alike Wilhelm Fliess! We wonder how intriguing would it have been to hear you both discuss role of sexual desires in psychopathology, neurasthenia and physically manifested symptoms of anxiety!
Your followers, patients, institutions, clinics are too small a testimony to your work. Let us share with you today, the fact that you read Shakespeare's plays for life, make some believe that your theories were even influenced by characters in the play. Even after almost a century, your theories still play some of the most significant roles in Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Experts discuss and research upon them even today. And when people like us enter the subject, we're all shown memes that say we'll be flooded with you theories :)
Jokes apart sir, we're really grateful to you for your work and guarantee you that centuries of students shall build upon them. We'd have been even more glad if you'd have never believed that addiction of tobacco made you work better and that you could control it. We're all genuinely sad to have lost this master of minds to mouth cancer :(
Nevertheless, as they say, legends stay immortal, so do you for everyone who studies even a single 'P' of Psychology.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIR!
